A superb antique and finely painted sarcophagus-form wooden singing bird box, by E. Flajoulet,
French
Retailed by Juvenia
circa 1895
Going-barrel movement
A stunning painting on each panel...
When wound and the start/stop slide moved to the right, the bird emerges through smartly pressed and pierced silver grille, moving metal beak, wings, and body from side-to-side to continuous synchronised birdsong of great melodic qualities.
The bird with grouped tonal feathered plumage in shades of light brown, turquoise, red and dark blue, lid top with two love birds, the main lid top and sides all with original and hand painted swags of flowers.
10cm x 6cm x 3.2cm high
Point of interest -
The last Juvenia singing bird box Douglas-Fisher handled, only stayed with us for a few weeks, and we could certainly see why. A thin preparation of their base colour, before the master painters got to work on all the flowers makes these most pleasing to the eye.
Using the very reliable Flajoulot movement with the highly efficient centrifuge governor, the bird sings beautifully, and indeed is one of the best singing going barrel birdboxes we've handled.
All the return and tension springs in Flajoulot movements are super-tempered meaning that hardly any loose power or slip out of tolerance over many years. A super example of a reliable and design-perfect singing bird box.
